Thinking of private practice?
Physical therapists usually get to choose where they work. More and more are now choosing to focus on private practices.
Are you strong enough to work for yourself? Are you independent enough to run a business successfully? It doesn’t matter how good of a physical therapist you are, it takes special business skills to succeed in the world of private practices.

Requirements
Commitment - can you discipline yourself to sit down and give 100% effort, day after day? You will have to work very hard to establish your business, and you will have to put in an extra effort to be successful.
Motivation – are you a highly motivated person? This has to come from within. You have to want to do the activity you are doing. Unless you can force yourself to do these activities, you will not be successful.
Other considerations...
Business location – is there a shortage of physical therapists in your area? Are there any competing practices operating near your location? You will want to find an area that is relatively underserved to reduce levels of competition. But, if you go somewhere that has not enough patients, you will not make enough money to survive.
Equipment – this all depends on what kinds of services you will be providing and who you will be treating.
Fees – how do you know how much to charge for your service? You will have to do some local research to see what others are charging, then adjust your price accordingly.
Where do I find clients?
Finding clients is the most important part of almost any business, but it is especially important for physical therapists. Here are the four primary areas where your patients will come from:
- Referrals from general practitioners
- Patients who found you by themselves
- Patients referred by health care companies
- Referrals from friends

How to get started...
What are my options for starting my own physical therapy business? Your options are:
- To buy a preexisting business – this allows you to start with a large client list. This will obviously cost much more than starting your own business, but you won’t have to look for clients.
- Start from scratch – you can always start from nothing and build your business the old fashioned way. You can set up in a gym, you can rent a room, or you can even work from home. This is a cost effective way to start, but it will be hard work. If you succeed, it will be well worth it in the end.
- Start part time – if you already have a pre-existing job, you can start treating patients in your spare time. Eventually, as you become more experienced and more popular, your workload will increase and you can expand further.
