Work from home
Running your physical therapy business from home
If you are a private physical therapist, you have a lot of freedom when choosing a location to run your business out of. You can either rent space in a clinic or a gym, you can share space with other people in the medical field, or you can even have people visit you at a home office. There are pros and cons to each of these approaches that you should evaluate before you decide what is best for you!
When most physical therapists start their career, they use a home office as an office. It is cost effective and allows some tax write-offs to be claimed.
The pros of running your business from home include:
- Tax write-offs
- Efficiency
- You don’t have to travel to work
- No travel costs
- No stress from daily travel
- Flexibility in scheduling appointments
- Low start-up costs
- Easier family life
- Easier to manage your day
- May be more convenient for your patients
The cons of running your business from home include:
- Don’t look professional to colleagues and patients
- May have trouble with the divide between work life and personal life
- Easy to be distracted
- Skewed work hours
- May not be able to provide clients all necessary amenities
- No chance for networking with others
If you do decide to practice physical therapy from home, Physio123 recommends taking the following into account to make clients feel comfortable and feel like they are working with a professional:
- Use a work area that is 100% isolated from your house. It needs to have toilet facilities and a dedicated entrance. Garages, basements and offices are great places to start your practice
- By having an isolated work area, you can reduce disruptions that will allow you to be more productive. You can eliminate interruptions from others when doing paperwork, taking calls, or writing notes
- You must have a safe to keep client files safe and confidential
- A well decorated office that is bright, clean, has comfortable furniture and smells nice creates a professional environment for both you and your clients. It lets them know you care about them and want them to be as comfortable as possible.
- A dedicated line to your business is essential. You don’t want to be sharing a phone line with your wife or kids when you are trying to take an important phone call.
